Crystal house and bench
In 2007, the City of Espoo asked me to design a work for the concrete pier of the demolished pier in Matinlahti beach park, near Matinkyläki beach. The area formed a central part of the Rantaraitti and was chosen as one of the sites for the 550th anniversary of the City of Espoo in 2008.
Due to the exceptionally bright light in the area, the work was inspired by a large crystal I bought at a flea market, the shape of which I moved to the top of the Crystal House, and inside it I placed another steel crystal cut into the shape of a mirror. The crystal house’s polished steel tube frame reflects the light of the shimmering sea 35 metres from the shore, where a bench in the spirit of the work is attached to the concrete pier of another pier for spectators.
