Kirsti Maunula (1935-2015), a fashion artist, MTO and costume designer, graduated from the Fashion Art Department of the School of Art and Design in 1959. After graduation, Maunula built a career as a versatile, industrial fashion designer whose collections are classically beautiful. Maunula was employed by for example Kestilä, Joutsela-Muoti, Rissanen and the Oravais, Avera and Kostuli collections, and the clothes he designed were sold domestically and exported, especially to the former Soviet Union.

During her career, Maunula also designed clothing and interior fabrics for Finlayson and costumes for various opera and theatre productions. Her first theatre costume design work was Jorma Panula and Aarni Krohn’s opera “Jaakko Ilkka” at the Ilmajoki Music Festival in 1978-1981. This was followed by costume designs for three operas in 1982 – 1994. Maunula’s speciality was the design of choir costumes. Her designs have included outfits for several Finnish choirs.
