Heikki Heimala graduated with a degree in interior architecture from the School of Art and Design in 1966. Even before graduating, Heimala worked as an interior designer at Rauma-Repola’s and Wärtsilä Group’s shipyards. After graduating, Heimala worked as an interior designer in an architecture firm until he founded his own one in 1972.

Heimala specialises in interior design for public spaces, and has designed interiors for ships, schools, libraries, and product design for various companies in the wood industry. In the 1970s, Heimala worked as a lecturer at the University of Art and Design and in the 1990s and early 2000s as a project designer in various research projects.
