Tuomas Antikainen graduated as an industrial designer from the University of Art and Design in 1992. Before that, he had studied scenography. Antikainen spent the years after graduation working as a freelance designer until the mid-1990s, when he founded Zurr , now known as Pure Design. Antikainen sold his stake in the company in 2010 and then returned to freelance design.

During his career Tuomas Antikainen has designed e.g. outdoor lighting for Idman and slitters for Metso Paper. In 1997 – 2005, Antikainen was part of the design team at Rocla, where he designed a pallet truck product family. In 2007, Antikainen and his team were awarded the Fennia Prize for the design of the TP20ac pallet truck. Tuomas Antikainen has also designed museum interiors and theatre productions.
